ROBERT MCPARTLAND & STEPHANIE TUCKWELL

ROBERT MCPARTLAND & STEPHANIE TUCKWELL

From June 14th - 20th, Spring Gallery will be showing paintings by Stephanie Tuckwell and Robert McPartland, who have been together for over 40 years, raising a family, maintaining their painting practices and encouraging and inspiring each other. Though distinct in subject matter and process, their work is connected by a shared love of light, space and balance.

Somewhere between abstraction and figuration Stephanie’s paintings draw inspiration from her experiences and memories of the natural world. Shapes dance to find their own rhythm, sometimes dissolving into a space whilst others are interrupted by a line our a mark; these are orchestrated until they become an image that evokes her emotional response to a particular experience of a time / event.

Robert’s work draws from Western and Eastern still life painting traditions and explores ever-present beauty that can often be overlooked in everyday life. Occasionally, we may experience these fleeting moments as epiphanies or through meditation; inspired by Zen philosophy, Robert aims to capture these moments for reflection through his paintings, which often have an ethereal sense of balance and clarity and give the viewer space to find their own meaning.

Stephanie was born in Kent; she graduated from Goldsmith’s College of Art and more recently gained an MA (distinction) Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from UWE. She has exhibited widely in the UK and been the recipient of many awards including the Consumer Intelligence 1st prize for Watercolours, RWA 161st Open, Bristol, Exhibition Award, Royal Watercolour Society, London, Regional prize-winner for Wales, Discerning Eye, London, Prize-winner the University of Glamorgan Art Purchase Prize.

Robert grew up in Redcar, North Yorkshire, a town surrounded by the drama of heavy industry, the North Sea and the North Yorkshire Moors. After studying art and working in London for over 20 years, he and his family moved to Cardiff, where he and Stephanie still live. He has exhibited extensively in the UK, has works in private and corporate collections and was an exhibiting finalist in The John Moores 2020. More details can be seen on his website.

Open 10-7pm Daily, except the last Monday when it will close at 1.30pm.
